Last Orders : by Graham Swift
"Last Orders" is a Booker Prize-winning (1996) novel by British writer Graham Swift. This is an interesting story of everyday people's inner as well as outer journey.
It is a road trip novel where a group of friends, sets off from Bermondsey to Margate (England) in a car to scatter the ashes of their late friend Jack Dodds, a butcher as per his last wish.
Each of the main characters tells his/ her story throughout the book. So the chapter headings are after the characters who are speaking in it. This confuses us as they all talk at the same time, about their past and present life. In the journey characters reveal their Jack-related memories, tragedies, fun, secrets, regrets etc.
Sometimes unexpected diversions and conversation in detail is boring. As well। the working class language of this book seems unfamiliar.
